1. For background to this letter, see “Draft Minutes of a Meeting of a Committee of the Directors of the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures,” August 1, 1792.
2. The enclosure was a letter to Low from John N. Cumming, accountant for the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures. Dated August 30, 1792, it reads in part as follows: “Mr. Pierce has received a letter from his brass Founder now in Philada informing that a quantity of Metal is expected there in about two Weeks. None is to be had in New York as it was all purchased up by a founder from Philada. Perhaps there may be some old brass Cannon at West point that are useless to the United States and might be had by applying to General Knox. Colo Hambleton would be a pro[per] person to apply to & sepossing it most proper that application to him should come thro you I have thought proper to trouble you thus far as a considerable quantity of Metal will be wanting” (ALS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress).
3. H endorsed this letter as follows: “Answer. The object would neither be obtainable nor adviseable.” Letter not found.
