Treasury Department, Revenue Office, June 23, 1794. “The purchase of Indian Supplies made on the 18th inst. by N. Hoffman & Co. for distribution by Genl Chapin2 amounts to £681. 4. 10. N. York Currency. Being made, as they represent for Cash, they are anxious for an immediate remittance of the money.…”3

On June 11, 1794, Coxe wrote to Nicholas Hoffman and Company of New York: “I have to request your immediate attention to the purchase of the Articles specified in the enclosed requisition of the Secretary at War. It will be perceived that considerable benefits from Cash payments, for articles which are out of season may be expected.… These goods are to be delivered to Mr. Israel Chapin a son of Mr. Chapin the Indian Agent …” (LC, RG 75, Letters of Tench Coxe, Commissioner of the Revenue, Relating to the Procurement of Military, Naval, and Indian Supplies, National Archives).
Israel Chapin, Sr., was superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Northern Department.
3. On June 18, 1794, a bill for £681.4.10, receipted by Chapin, was presented to the Treasury Department by Hoffman. On June 24, 1794, Warrant No. 3778 was issued to Nicholas Hoffman & Company for $1,703.11. On July 15, 1794, a bill for $310.57, the balance of the account, was recorded at the Treasury (DS, RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, Account No. 5718, National Archives).
