Alexander Hamilton Papers

To Alexander Hamilton from James McHenry, 19 June 1799

From James McHenry, 19 June 1799

War department June 19. 1799

Sir,

I have not been able to procure in this quarter a qualified person to act as temporary Surgeons Mate which I had proposed sending to Niagara to relieve Dr. Coffin. If you can recommend one let me know and I will send you a Warrant of appointment for him. In the mean while you may order him to the Garrison.

I have the honor to be with great respect Sir Your obedient servant

James McHenry

Major General Hamilton

(LS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress). On the cover, H’s draft of his reply reads: "It will be I imagine impracticable to obtain such a person temporarily for so remote a destination—Doctor Coffin suggests that he can make an arrangement. As no additional expence to the public should accrue from a personal accommodation to Dr. Coffin—⟨Unless it not⟩ if I hear nothing from the Secy to the Contrary I will authorise Maj Rivardi to grant a furlough on condition that a competent arrangement is made free from expence to the public."
