John Jay Papers

To John Jay from Seth Harding, 27 December 1779

From Seth Harding

On Board Ship Confederacy
Off Port Royal, Decr: 27th 1779.

Sir,

I arrived within about three Miles of this Harbor, about Eight O’Clock last Evening when we were obligated to come to Anchor, where we lay till this Morning, weighed Anchor about Eight OClock, and stood in for the Harbor where we arrived about 9 OClock.

Have not had Time to make much inquiry about Spars, &c. for the Ship; but have Reason to think, from what I have heard, that I shall not be so well supplied as I expected,—as I am informed the Masts are to be made Masts. I will write you more fully on the Subject Tomorrow; shall be as expeditious about fixing out the Ship as possible, and shall proceed agreeable to your Instructions, which you will please to send by Mr: Laurence, who waits on you with this for the Purpose. As I am persuaded that we shall be but indifferently supplied in this Place I think it would be most prudent to give me Instructions to proceed to some part of the Continent of America where the Ship can be best supplied, which, I think, would be Boston, or Rhode Island, provided the Enemy does not leave New York Time enough for us to go there.

For further Particulars inquire, of Mr: Laurence. I am, with Respect, &c.
