1. When the convention in Philadelphia recessed for ten days on 27 July 1787, several of the delegates, including George Mason Sr. of Virginia, accompanied by his son John Mason, AH, and Hugh Williamson (1735–1819) of North Carolina, came to New York. See JJ to George Mason Jr., 9 Aug. 1787, below. Arthur St. Clair was president of Congress, and James Duane was mayor of New York. (Major) Thomas Butler (1748–1805) and his brother (Captain) Edward Butler (1762–1803) were two of the famous “Fighting Butlers” along with their other brothers, General Richard Butler (1743–91), Colonel William Butler (1745–89), and Lieutenant Percival Butler (1760–1821). In addition to the connection of some of the guests at this dinner to the Constitutional Convention, several were involved in the controversies over the Jay–Gardoqui negotiations and frontier defense issues.
