Standing Committee |

Richard Lawrence | ||
Willet Seaman | ||
John Lawrence | ||
William Shotwell and sundry other Members.— |
The standing Committee made a written Report of their proceedings since the last quarterly Meeting which was read and Ordered to be inserted on the Minutes Vizt.—
That since the last Meeting of the Society they have effected the Liberty of a considerable number of Negroes who formerly belonged to Persons whose Estates were Forfeited by a late Law of the Legislature of this State; and that the Cases of several others similarly Circumstanced; are, at present under the Consideration of the Committee—
That the Committee with peculiar Pleasure inform the Society that, owing to the Exertions of its Members; the spirit of Kidnapping has much Abated and the practise of Selling Negroes at Auction and otherwise greatly Discountenanced by many of the good Citizens of this State who in Fact are not Members of this Society—
Your Committee close their Report with recommending sundry Persons whose names are herewith presented to the favorable Notice of the Society; they having requested to become Members thereof—
John Lawrence, Willet Seaman, Richard Lawrence, William Shotwell, George Bond.
The Committee appointed to solicit Subscriptions for the establishment and support of a School for the Education of negroe Children; made a written Report of their proceedings since the last quarterly Meeting of the Society which was read and Ordered to be inserted on the minutes, vizt.—
“That altho’ we have not, since the last quarterly Meeting of the Society; met with the encouragement we wished; yet some Addition hath been made to the Fund; the Sum subscribed being now £801.12 of which upwards of £500 is Collected and at present draws Interest—
That we apprehend it would Conduce to the promoting of so valuable an Institution; were the Society to make an immediate attempt to open the School and supply the deficiency of the present Subscriptions by appropriating a part of the general Fund of the Society for that purpose which we think cannot be better applied—And altho’ the present Finances are not adequate to a beginning on so large a Plan as we wish, yet as the smallest Essay will probably forward the Design and influence some benevolent Minds, who have not yet Contributed: to afford their Aid; We are fully of Opinion that a Committee should be appointed forthwith to open a School upon such a Plan as the Society may think the present Fund will Admit.
That your Committee recommend to the Society the Loaning of the Monies in such manner as may be judged most proper to secure the same—
Finally your Committee are of Opinion that as the Subscribers to the said Fund, many of whom have been very Liberal; must be anxious to see something attempted in consequence of their Donations, it is absolutely necessary that the School be opened with all possible Dispatch.”—by order of the Committee
John Murray Junr”
Whereupon a Motion was made by Willet Seaman and seconded by White Matlack that a Committee be appointed for the purpose of enquiring for a proper Lot for a School and to report the Price of the same; and the Plan of a School House, together with an Estimate of the Expense at the next Stated Meeting. A Motion was made by Lawrence Embree and seconded by Nathaniel Lawrence; that a Committee be appointed to draw such a Memorial to the fœderal Convention at Philadelphia as may in their Opinion tend to promote the Attainment of the Objects of this Society—
