Resolutions of Federalist Freeholders of New York City
[13 Jan. 1801]
At a numerous and respectable meeting of the Federal Republican Freeholders of the City of New York, at the Tontine City Hotel, on Tuesday the 13th of January 1801, convened pursuant to public notice, to consider of a proper person to be nominated for Governor of this State, at the ensuing election: Cornelius Ray Esqr. in the chair.
His Excellency Governor Jay having declined the suffrages of his fellow citizens for the office of Governor at the next election; and this meeting conceiving it necessary to draw the public attention to a person proper to succeed him, Therefore
Resolved unanimously as the sense of this meeting that
Stephen Van Rensselaer Esqr.
Our present Lieutenant Governor, is a proper person to execute the office of Governor of this State; and that if he shall be a candidate at the ensuing election, this meeting will give him their cordial suffrages and most zealous support.
Resolved unanimously that this meeting entertains a high and gratified sense of the eminent services, which Governor Jay has rendered to his Country in the various and important stations he has filled, as well during as since our revolution, and that in the opinion of this meeting, he will carry with him into his retirement, and continue to possess, the exalted esteem and affectionate remembrance of every enlightened and impartial friend to the liberty peace and happiness of his country.
Resolved further, that Robert Troup, Richard Harison, Cornelius Ray, Archibald Gracie James Watson, William W. Woolsey, and James M. Hughes Esqrs. be a committee to make known to the persons before mentioned the sense of this Meeting, and to communicate with our fellow citizens in other parts of the State, respecting the ensuing election of Governor and Lieutenant Governor, reporting the result to the Meeting at as early a day, as may be practicable.
