From Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 4 March 1793
To George Washington
Mar. 4. 93.
Th: Jefferson, with his respects to the President, incloses him a letter from the Van Staphorsts & Hubbard quieting our apprehensions for the fate of the first dispatches sent to Mr. Short relative to our negociations with Spain.—Also another letter from Mr. Thatcher on the subject of the Marshal of Maine.
RC (DNA: RG 59, MLR); addressed: “The President of the US.”; endorsed by Tobias Lear. Tr (Lb in same, SDC). Not recorded in SJL. Enclosures: (1) Van Staphorst & Hubbard to TJ, 29 Nov. 1792 (mistakenly endorsed by TJ as received 9 Mch. 1793, but recorded in SJL as received 4 Mch. 1793). (2) George Thatcher to TJ, Philadelphia, 3 Mch. 1793, recommending the appointment of deputy marshal John Hobby as federal marshal for the district of Maine in preference to William Vaughan of Portland, who was in the capital soliciting the appointment (RC in DLC: Washington Papers, Applications for Office; at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Secretary of State”; endorsed by TJ as received 3 Mch. 1793 and so recorded in SJL).
TJ notified Hobby of his interim appointment as marshal of maine in a letter of 19 Apr. 1793 (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 59, DL; at head of text: “John Hobby Esqre.”; not recorded in SJL). Washington nominated Hobby to the post on 27 Dec. 1793, and the Senate confirmed him on 30 Dec. 1793 ( , i, 142–4). The other letter Thatcher wrote to TJ on this appointment was probably that dated 26 Feb. 1793, which is recorded in SJL as received the following day but has not been found.
