TJ notified Hobby of his interim appointment as marshal of maine in a letter of 19 Apr. 1793 (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 59, DL; at head of text: “John Hobby Esqre.”; not recorded in SJL). Washington nominated Hobby to the post on 27 Dec. 1793, and the Senate confirmed him on 30 Dec. 1793 (JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States … to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828 description ends , i, 142–4). The other letter Thatcher wrote to TJ on this appointment was probably that dated 26 Feb. 1793, which is recorded in SJL as received the following day but has not been found.
