Joseph Yznardi, Jr., the scion of a Cadiz mercantile family who had come to the United States in January 1793 in quest of a consular appointment in that city, obtained the post the following month on the strength of letters of recommendation from William Carmichael and Nathaniel Cutting stressing his mercantile experience, his fluency in English, and his family’s influence with the Spanish court (Nathaniel Cutting to TJ, 30 Jan. 1793, and note; Memorandum on Consuls and Consular Appointments, 15 Feb. 1793). Yznardi remained in America until he embarked for Spain in March 1794; he supplied wine to TJ for many years thereafter. During much of his term as consul Yznardi was away from Cadiz, and he deputed his father, Joseph Yznardi, Sr., to act in his behalf. In February 1801 the Senate approved John Adams’s nomination of Henry Prebble to the post, but TJ did not issue a commission and instead appointed Yznardi’s father as consul later the same year (Yznardi, Sr., to Edmund Randolph, 2 Sep., 12 Nov. 1794, and to Timothy Pickering, 3 Apr. 1800, Vindication of Yznardi, Sr., [10 Nov. 1800], and Alexander J.
