collector of bath: for the resignation of William Webb and the decision to appoint Dudley B. Hobart, see Vol. 41:511-12, 571-2.

In early 1803, Ephraim Kirby and other Connecticut Republicans urged TJ to appoint george wolcott in place of Richard Dickinson (Vol. 39:581; Vol. 40:61-2, 85-7).

On 18 Nov., New Jersey senator John Condit wrote to Gallatin, recommending the appointment of aaron hassert to the vacancy at New Brunswick (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR, endorsed by TJ: “Hassert Aaron. to be Surveyor of customs at New Brunswick & Inspector of revenue at do. in the district of Perth Amboy”). andrew lyle, appointed by TJ in March 1802, submitted his resignation to the secretary of state on 19 Aug., citing “ill health” and “the pressure of domestic avocations” (RC in DNA: RG 59, RD, endorsed by TJ: “Lyle Andrew to mr Madison. resigns office of Surveyor of New Brunswick. enquire Doctr. Condit”; Vol. 37:23, 53).

surveyor of winton: on 16 Nov., Samuel Tredwell, collector at Edenton, North Carolina, informed the Treasury secretary that three Winton residents, including Peterson Gurley and Thomas N. Brickell, a former applicant, had applied for the surveyorship upon learning of Laurence Mooney’s death. He noted that all were known to Congressman Thomas Wynns and Senator David Stone (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR, endorsed by TJ: “Mooney Laurence. Surveyor of Winton. dead”; Biog. Dir. Cong. description begins Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-1989, Washington, D.C., 1989 description ends ; Vol. 37:314n, 341, 343n). According to SJL, on 26 Nov. TJ received a letter from North Carolina congressman Willis Alston recommending Gurley as surveyor, but it has not been found.
