Robert Quarles (1763–1827), of Columbia, Fluvanna County, served as an ensign and regimental quartermaster in the Continental army from May 1782 until the close of the Revolutionary War and was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He was a major in the Albemarle County militia during the latter part of the 1780s and superintendent of the state arsenal at Point of Fork in Fluvanna County from 1793 until it closed in 1801. Quarles served on the Virginia Council of State, 1812–15, and subsequently was state quartermaster general. He relocated to Missouri shortly before his death (PTJ description begins Julian P.
