Enclosure: Clinton, A Memoir on the Antiquities of the Western Parts of the State of New-York. Read before the Literary and Philosophical Society of New-York (Albany, 1818; , 5 [no. 173]; TJ’s copy in MiU-C); dated Albany, 7 Oct. 1817, and addressed from Clinton as society president to its vice president, Samuel L. Mitchill; asserting that “the western parts of the United States were, prior to their discovery and occupation by Europeans, inhabited by numerous nations in a settled state and much further advanced in civilization than the present tribes of Indians” (p. 4); and, as evidence, describing the towns, artifacts, and human remains he had observed in the western counties of New York.
