It is with great pleasure that I transmit to you by this mail a book relative to the Canals of this State.
I gladly avail myself of this occasion to express my sincere veneration for your exalted character and distinguished public services

I have taken the liberty to transmit a similar book for the board of Public Works of Virginia, of which Govr Randolph is, I believe, President.
RC (MHi); between signature and postscript: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr”; endorsed by TJ as received 16 Oct. 1821 and so recorded in SJL; with Dft of TJ to Clinton, 16 Oct. 1821, beneath endorsement. Dft (Lb in NNC: Clinton Papers); lacking signature.
The book that Clinton sent was Public Documents, relating to the New-York Canals, which are to connect the Western and Northern Lakes, with the Atlantic Ocean; with an Introduction (New York, 1821; , 6 [no. 235]). On 2 Oct. 1821 Clinton sent the same work to Andrew Jackson ( , 5:509).
