6 April 1805, New Orleans. “I enclose you a translation of the Address [not found] recently made by the Mayor to the Board of Alderman. The translator has done great injustice to the original; a perusal however of the paper enclosed, will give you some information as to the present State of the City.”1

The enclosure (1 p.; printed in Carter, Territorial Papers, Orleans, 9:398–404) is a broadside, in English and French, of James Pitot’s 25 Feb. 1805 notice, “To all the Inhabitants of the City and Precincts of New-Orleans,” announcing the election of aldermen on the first Monday in March and listing the boundaries of the wards and their polling places.
