Making tow hunderd & fourteen dollars & 15/100 $ one Bill On the Honett. Thomas Jefferson presidant of united Staits for 231—9 Sents Which you will please to present for payment as i am unaquented with anay marchant in Your City i must beeg the faver of you to Send th[e] money When due To me at—Stonington in the Stait of Cennetecet & in My absens. To Capt. Jabish. Holmes of that plase Whoos Resceete Shall Be amaditely Sent on to you if it Would Be agreeabel to you to Sind th[e] money amadietely By deeducting th[e] intrest fur the time due It Would Bee Very agreeabel to Mee Whate Expense is in the Busines you Will plees to deeduct.2
“You will plees to owne th[e] Resiption of thoes Bills by th[e] poust. & direct your Letters to me At Stonington in my absens to Capt. Jabish Holmes—of that plase.”3

2. On 4 May 1805 JM requested Albert Gallatin to issue “a warrant on the appropriation for the relief of Seamen, for two hundred and fifty one dollars & Sixty eight Cents in favor of Wm. Hazard the holder of the enclosed bill of exchange drawn upon me, on the 8th. Decr. last, for the same sum, by Stephen Cathalan, Commercial Agent of the United States at Marseilles, who is to be charged with the same. I have also to request that the warrant may be paid by a draft on the Collector of New London in favor of said Hazard or order” (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14; 1 p.).
3. On 4 May 1805 JM replied to Hazard: “The amount of Mr. Cathalan’s bill in your favor for 251. 68/100 will be paid to your order by the Collector of the Customs at New London” (ibid.; 1 p.). Also on 4 May JM wrote Jedediah Huntington, collector at New London: “By an arrangement with the Treasury I have obtained a draft on you for 251 68/100 dollars in favor of Mr. Hazard or order, to whom I request the favor of your paying it” (ibid.; 1 p.).
