JM to Thomas Jefferson, 31 Aug. 1806, and JM to Sanford, 31 Aug. 1806, indicate that this letter inquired whether Thomas Lewis, who had returned to the United States after serving as captain of the Leander in Francisco de Miranda’s expedition against Spanish forces in Venezuela, should be brought to trial in New York.
