From George Davis, 2 March 1807 (Abstract)

§ From George Davis. 2 March 1807, Leghorn. No. 2. “I have this day received a letter from Commodore Campbell, an extract of which I have the honor to enclose you and shall hold myself in readiness to embark with Capt. Dent for Syracuse or Malta according to his orders.1

“The object of my visiting Syracuse is, I presume, to have an interview with the Ex-Bashaw and to make some arrangement respecting the Gun Boats mentioned in my letter to Commodore Campbell of the 20th. November.2

“Colo. Lear is at Tunis and I learn that our affairs with that Regency are amicably arranged.

“The merchant vessel which was to have taken me to Tripoli is daily expected at this place.”

RC, two copies, and enclosure (DNA: RG 59, CD, Tripoli, vol. 3); letterbook copy and letterbook copy of enclosure (NHi: George Davis Letterbooks). Both RCs 1 p.; in John C. Payne’s hand, signed by Davis. Second RC marked “(Duplicate.).” For enclosure, see n. 1.

1The enclosure, marked “(Extract.),” is a copy of Hugh G. Campbell to Davis, 15 Feb. 1807 (1 p.). Campbell reported that he had ordered Capt. Dent to receive Davis on board and convey him to Syracuse or Malta, where Campbell would see Davis before Davis went to Tripoli. Campbell also stated that he had ordered Dent to wait no more than six or seven days, “his services being wanted in another quarter,” and hoped that would be sufficient time for Davis.
