Memorandum List of Quitrents
1770. “A List of Lands belonging to Geo: Washington in the Northern Neck—on wch Quitrents became due Michaelmas—1770.”1
AD, DLC:GW.
1. What follows is identical with what was printed in Memorandum: List of Quitrents, 1769, except that GW records 200 acres bought from John Posey at Mount Vernon in Fairfax County, changing the total acreage in Fairfax County to 5,518, the overall total to 12,463, and the total levy paid to £15.11.6. John Hough’s appended receipt for payment of the levy is dated 18 June 1771. GW does not list here the 100 acres for which he paid George Mason in 1769 nor does he list the land on any of his surviving quitrent lists, the last of which was submitted in 1773. This Mason land had been in GW’s actual possession since he bought it from Sampson Darrell in 1757. The payment to Mason and his deed of release seem to have been merely an adjustment and affirmation of GW’s title to the land which was the subject of a boundary dispute between Mason and Darrell. See Mason to GW, 9 April 1768, and note, and 14 Oct. 1769, n.2.
