From George Washington to Matthew Thornton, 16 January 1776

To Matthew Thornton

Cambridge, 16 January 1776. Requests two regiments of militia to be sent from New Hampshire to reinforce the Continental army until 1 April.

LS, in Robert Hanson Harrison’s writing, MeHi; LB, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. This letter is very similar in wording to the one of this date that GW wrote to Governor Trumbull. It omits only the last part of the second paragraph of the letter to Trumbull beginning “Besides the Arms.” The letter-book copy of the Thornton letter is a memorandum explaining this omission.
