1. Butler apparently had secured leave from his command of the 4th Pennsylvania Regiment (see GW to Butler, 12 Nov. 1778). During the previous summer and fall, Butler had served on the New York frontier, and it is probable that GW wanted to converse with him while planning an expedition against the Indians along the Pennsylvania-New York frontier (see GW to John Stark, 5 Aug. 1778; GW to Butler, 24 Aug. 1778; Butler to GW, 31 Aug., 27 Sept., and 2 Oct. 1778; and Questions and Answers Regarding a Proposed Expedition Against the Six Nations, March–April 1779).
