From Peter Scull

War-Office [Philadelphia] 3d July 1779.

Sir.

I do myself the honour to inclose your Excellency a resolution of Congress of the 2d instant relative to the resignation of Major Burkhardt,1 I am, with profound respect Your Excellency’s Most obedt & most hbl. serv.

P. Scull Secretary

ALS, DNA: RG 93, manuscript file no. 18313.

1The enclosure has not been identified, but Congress passed a resolution on 2 July accepting the resignation of Maj. Daniel Burchardt, who had commanded the German Battalion (JCC, description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends 14:794). A memorial from Burchardt, written at Philadelphia on the same date, prompted this action. That memorial in part reads: “it would be no difficulty in the world either to promote one of the Captains of that Battalion to the Rank of Major or to appoint another Field Officer to command the Regiment during the Absence of the Colonel” (DNA:PCC, item 41).

Burchardt had petitioned Congress to resign on 29 June, citing financial distress from “the Enemys Depredations and Waste” of his estate near Philadelphia (DNA:PCC, item 78). Congress read Burchardt’s petition on the same date and referred it to the Board of War (JCC, description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends 14:781; see also JCC, description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends 14:788–89).
