From George Washington to Major Lemuel Trescott, 15 May 1780

To Major Lemuel Trescott

Hd Qrs [Morristown] 15th May 1780

Sir,

I have received your favor of Yesterday, & thank you for the intelligence it contains—I have only to desire, that you will communicate any thing further respecting the fleet1 as speedily as possible—& you will be perfectly on your guard—I hear a number of Vessels have gone up Hackensack river also, which leads me to believe they intend a large forage.2 I am &c.

G.W.

Df, in Richard Kidder Meade’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. The docket of the draft reads: “Major Trescott on Command at Paramus [N.J.].”

GW wrote Trescott a second time on this date: “I wrote you a little time past in answer to yr letter of Yesterday.

“This will be delivered you by Major Moore, who commands the detachment intended to relieve you—but as the Enemy are out, I would have you remain, at least, until intentions are better known” (Df, in Richard Kidder Meade’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). GW is referring to Maj. Thomas Lloyd Moore (see General Orders, 14 May; see also Moore to GW, 22 May).

1At this point on the draft, Meade wrote and then crossed out “that may come within your knowledge.”

2See Elias Dayton to GW, this date; see also Jedediah Huntington to GW, this date, two letters (letter 1; letter 2).
