1On 1 June, GW had written Wadsworth from Morristown: “I send you the Copy of a letter to your Governor by which you will see my apprehensions for West point. You know the importance of that post—You know how to partake in our feelings—See the Governor, and give your influence to the Aid we request.” GW added a postscript: “You will keep the communication of the Governors letter out of sight” (LS, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, Ct: Trumbull Papers; Df, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). The enclosed copy of GW’s letter of 1 June to Connecticut governor Jonathan Trumbull, Sr., has not been found.

2Wadsworth is referring to Nehemiah Hubbard, the deputy quartermaster general for Connecticut.

3In May, the Connecticut state assembly resolved that £2,000 in state bills of credit be advanced to Hubbard to enable him to transport provisions to the army, on condition that the United States loan officer in Connecticut credit the state for an equal amount (see Conn. Public Records description begins The Public Records of the State of Connecticut . . . with the Journal of the Council of Safety . . . and an Appendix. 18 vols. to date. Hartford, 1894–. description ends , 3:38)

4Matthew Griswold was the deputy governor of Connecticut.
