To George Washington from Thomas Jefferson, 12 December 1792 [letter not found]

Letter not found: from Thomas Jefferson, 12 Dec. 1792. An ALS, sold by Anderson Galleries, Howard K. Sanderson Sale, lot 471, 1–3 May 1916. According to the catalog entry, this letter asks GW to call at Jefferson’s house, when riding out, to see Samuel Mulliken’s model of a machine for sawing stone.1

1. The commissioners for the federal district had brought Samuel Mulliken and his saw for cutting stone to Jefferson’s attention in their letter to him of 5 Dec. (see Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 24:699–700). GW apparently responded positively to Jefferson’s invitation because Jefferson’s short note written to GW later on 12 Dec. reads: “Th: Jefferson presents his respectful compliments to the President & will take care to be at home tomorrow morning at 10. aclock” (DLC:GW).
