To George Washington from Henry Knox, 13 July 1793

From Henry Knox

War department July 13th 1793

Sir,

I have the honor to submit the enclosed letter from James Ore to the Governor of Virginia and transmitted by Lieutenant Governor Wood to me.1 I have shown it to Governor Blount2 who while he exceedingly laments the event, has no doubt of the authenticity of the letter knowing the hand Writing and person of James Ore. I have expected the Governor to consider of the measures proper to be pursued on this disagreeable affair and to let me have the result in Writing, which shall be submitted.3

I have the honor to be with the greatest respect your obedient Servant

H. Knox

1James Wood enclosed trader James Ore’s letter to Henry Lee of 18 June 1793 in a letter to Knox of 8 July (Vi: Executive Letter Book, 1792–1794). Ore’s letter, which has not been identified, duplicated a report by Arthur Campbell that on 12 June a militia unit of the Southwest Territory had attacked a friendly Cherokee village, killing several of its inhabitants (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 196; Campbell to Lee, 24 June 1793, Calendar of Virginia State Papers description begins William P. Palmer et al., eds. Calendar of Virginia State Papers and Other Manuscripts. 11 vols. Richmond, 1875–93. description ends , 6:409–10). Daniel Smith, secretary of the Southwest Territory, also wrote Knox about this incident in his letter of 13 June 1793 (Knox to GW, 16 July 1793, and note 1).

2On the presence of William Blount, the governor of the Southwest Territory, in Philadelphia, see Blount to Knox, 6 June 1793, Carter, Territorial Papers description begins Clarence Edwin Carter et al., eds. The Territorial Papers of the United States. 27 vols. Washington, D.C., 1934–69. description ends , 4:270. He arrived in Philadelphia on 9 July 1793 (William Blount to John Gray Blount, 10 July 1793, Blount Papers description begins Alice Barnwell Keith et al., eds. The John Gray Blount Papers. 4 vols. Raleigh, N.C., 1952–82. description ends , 2:282–83).
